Can anyone be hypnotised? Yes - most people can be hypnotised as long as they want to be. A hypnotherapist cannot force you to go into hypnosis against your will. Hypnotherapy is very much a "consent" state, it is not dangerous providing you are working with a trained and qualified hypnotherapist. Can hypnotherapy make me do anything against my will? No, hypnosis is very much a "consent" state and if suggestions were made to you that did not confirm to your personal code, then you would not comply with the suggestions and would spontaneously come out of the hypnotic state. You cannot become stuck in hypnosis, once all suggestions had ceased, you would wake up normally. You will remain in control at all times, they hypnotherapist does not have control over you and if you decided to get up and walk out, then you could do so. Will I remember what happened during hypnosis? Yes and no. You will remember some things but not all. This is the way our memory works normally e.g. when you listen to a speech or talk, you may have started off listening to the person speaking but you never remember everything that has been said. Research suggests that we only retain about 30% of what we hear unless we take written notes. So how can hypnosis help to resolve problems? When we are in hypnosis, we are more relaxed, both physically and mentally. When this occurs, our mind operates more efficiently and effectively. When the mind and body are relaxed we have better access to our memories. We are the product of our memories and past experiences. Sometimes we need to return to a memory in order to resolve what happened for our peace of mind before we can move on in the future. How many hypnotherapy sessions will I need? This depends on the problem or change that you want to make. For stopping smoking it is usually one session, for anything else, it can range from 1 - 10 sessions. The hypnotherapist will discuss this with you at your first appointment. How often will I need to see the hypnotherapist? This depends on the type of problem and on the progress made. If you require 2 or 3 sessions then the hypnotherapist will usually see you once a week, however some clients see the hypnotherapist once a fortnight or once a month depending on their circumstances.
